We need a few things before we move out to the Belt:The linked article is good - very infomration dense. I would add that things will really take off when fabricators are perfected enabling settlements to sever supply lines and live off the land.
- space elevators to get us out of the gravity well
- good hydroponic mini-farms
- efficient airlocks
- a replacement for government title registries
